Need a Safe Fitted Properly?

Bought a safe and now wondering how it gets fixed down? Runcorn Locksmith fits home and business safes across Runcorn, bolting each one into a solid floor or wall so it meets the manufacturer's fixing instructions and what your insurer expects. There is no call-out charge. Call 01928 611001.

The point most people miss is that a safe's grade only counts once it is installed correctly. A safe that is not fixed can be carried out of the house, however heavy it felt on delivery. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: item 23, and whether safes are supplied as well as fitted or fitting only.] If you are locked out of a safe rather than fitting one, see our safe opening page.

Why Installation Decides Whether Your Insurance Pays

A cash rating is the sum an insurer will consider covering when cash or valuables are kept inside a particular safe. That rating is granted on an assumption: the safe is fitted the way its manufacturer specifies. For almost every rated safe, that means anchoring it into a concrete floor or a solid masonry wall.

A safe standing loose on floorboards, tucked in a wardrobe or screwed into plasterboard has not been fitted to that specification. If it disappears in a burglary, whether the rating still applied can become a real question when you claim. Most insurers require rated safes to be fixed down, and an unfixed safe may affect your cover. Policies differ, so read your own wording and check the requirement with your insurer before you rely on it.

Whether a given safe can go where you want it comes down to its design, size, weight, the maker's instructions, the route into the property and the spot you have chosen. So before we book, it helps to have the make and model, rough height, width and depth, an approximate weight, and the installation instructions or product manual if you still have them. Send what you can find and we will tell you what else we need. We then fix the safe to manufacturer specification, into a surface that will hold it, and say plainly if your chosen position will not work. For the lock side of the same insurance question, see BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks explained.

Cash Ratings and Eurograde: What Your Insurer Is Asking For

If your insurer has given you a cash figure or a grade to meet, this section explains what that means in practice. The table sets the three terms side by side.

Term What it describes Where the figure comes from
Cash rating The amount of cash an insurer may be prepared to cover in that safe The safe's certification, then confirmed against your own policy
Valuables rating Cover for jewellery, watches and other high-value items Often higher than the cash rating; the calculation varies by insurer
Eurograde (EN 1143-1 resistance grade) How long and how determined an attack the safe resisted in testing The certificate or plate issued after independent testing

[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: cash and valuables figures for each Eurograde, from certification body or insurer guidance, before any numbers are added to this table.]

01

Cash rating and valuables rating

A cash rating shows how much cash an insurer may agree to cover when it is kept in that safe. Treat it as a guide rather than a guaranteed limit, because insurers attach their own conditions. The valuables figure covers items such as jewellery and watches and is often quoted as ten times the cash rating, but the sum may be higher or lower depending on the insurer, so never assume one multiplier suits every policy. Ask your insurer what level you need for what you plan to store, before you choose a safe. Where one large safe will not fit, two smaller ones can sometimes give a combined rating that does.

02

Eurograde and EN 1143-1

EN 1143-1 is the European standard for testing how well safes and similar secure storage resist burglary. A safe that passes independent testing to it may be given a resistance grade, usually called a Eurograde. Grades start at 0 and climb, each step meaning a longer, more skilled attack was withstood. As a rough guide, homes are commonly served by Grade 0 or 1, shops and hospitality venues often need Grade 2 or 3, and high-value stock calls for a talk with your insurer first. AiS and ECBS are the certification bodies whose marks carry weight.

03

Not every safe sold is actually certified

Plenty of safes on sale in the UK are labelled "security safe" or carry the maker's own star rating, with no independent EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 certification behind them. However solid they look, they carry no recognised cash or valuables rating. Check for a certification plate or label that names both the standard and the testing body, not just a number the manufacturer printed. It is the same habit as checking a door lock for its BS 3621 mark, covered in our BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks guide.

Where a Safe Should Actually Be Fitted

A rating tells you the level of protection a safe has been assessed for; it does not on its own settle what any one insurer will pay out. The right rating depends on what you are storing, what it is insured for and what your insurer asks for, and some other storage products are tested to different standards altogether. Once the safe is chosen, its position is a balance between keeping it hidden, keeping it usable, and what the building can physically take.

01

Floor fixing

The usual method. The safe is bolted down through its base into a solid concrete floor using the fixing points the manufacturer provides. A suspended timber floor will not hold a safe against someone determined to remove it, which is why how the floor is built matters more than which room it is in.

02

Wall fixing

Used where a floor fixing is not practical. The safe is bolted into solid masonry, never into plasterboard or a stud partition. This suits smaller safes and wall safes recessed into brickwork. Whether it is viable depends entirely on how the wall is built, and a stud wall rules it out.

03

Underfloor safes

Set down into the floor and hidden under a covering. They are very hard to remove and easy to conceal, but the floor has to be opened and the safe set in concrete. That makes it planned work, booked in advance, rather than something fitted on the day you call.

04

Where not to put it

Avoid the obvious places, such as the main bedroom wardrobe. Keep it out of sight of windows and doors. Do not stand it on a surface that cannot carry the weight, and steer clear of damp spots, which slowly harm both the safe and what is inside it.

Safes We Fit

The right fixing for any of these depends on the safe's design, its weight, what it will be used for and the maker's instructions, so we check the safe and the structure around it before choosing a method. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: item 23 before publishing this list, naming only the safe types and grades actually fitted.]

  • Home safes for cash, jewellery and personal documents
  • Commercial and cash-handling safes for shops, offices and licensed premises
  • Fire-rated safes for paperwork and data
  • Wall safes and underfloor safes
  • Deposit safes, where takings go in without the safe being opened

Key Safe Installation

A key safe is a small box fixed to an outside wall with a door key inside. Most are put up so that carers, relatives or a care agency can let themselves in to someone who cannot get to the door, whether that is an elderly parent living alone or someone recovering at home. They also help with holiday lets, tradespeople and shared access.

A key safe is only as secure as its fixing and where it sits. Three things matter:

  • Position it where it cannot be seen from the street.
  • Fix it into solid masonry, not into render or the mortar joints.
  • Choose a police-approved model tested to a recognised standard, which is what care providers and some insurers ask for.

Councils and housing associations sometimes arrange a key safe as part of a care package, so it is worth asking before you buy one. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether key safes are fitted, and whether police-approved models are supplied or must be customer-supplied.] For other work around the home, see our residential locksmith page.

Already Bought a Safe? We Can Fit It

Most of the pages selling safe installation belong to retailers who only fit what they sell. Many people order a safe online or from a shop, then find that delivery stops at the front door, or that the safe needs fixing down properly before it means anything to an insurer. We fit safes bought from anywhere, following the manufacturer's specification. Before any drilling starts, we tell you if the spot you have in mind will not take the safe, or if the safe falls short of what your insurer has asked for. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether safes are also supplied; if so, add one sentence offering that here.] Call 01928 611001 with the make and model to hand.

Locksmith pricing

What Does Safe Installation Cost?

There is no single price for fitting a safe, because the safe, the access, the position and the work involved vary so much from one property to the next. A bigger or heavier safe can need extra handling, a second technician or moving equipment, and its size decides how it gets through the house. Whatever the job, the wall or floor has to be checked against the safe's fixing requirements, and the fixings, materials and time follow from that. The main factors are:

  • The size and weight of the safe
  • The fixing method and what the floor or wall is made of
  • Whether the floor or wall needs preparing first
  • Access: stairs, narrow entrances, tight corridors, parking and the distance from the van
  • A straightforward bolt-down versus an underfloor safe set in concrete

A small home safe bolted to a concrete floor is usually the quickest job; an underfloor safe is the most involved. You are given a price on the call from what you describe, and if something on site changes it, you hear why before any work starts. There is no call-out charge at any hour. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

Sending a photo of the safe and of the spot you want it in helps, since both shape the quote. For more on how pricing works, read our full guide to locksmith prices in Runcorn. To get a price now, call 01928 611001.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

What Happens When You Call

  1. Give us the safe's make, model, size and rough weight, or send a photo, and tell us where you want it and whether the route in involves stairs, narrow doors or tight corners.
  2. We confirm whether that position will work, explain the work needed and give you the price to approve before anything is booked in.
  3. A DBS-checked technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence] fixes the safe using a method suited to the model, the maker's instructions and the structure it is going into, and answers any questions about using the safe afterwards.
  4. You receive an invoice recording the safe fitted, the fixing method and its position. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: itemised invoicing, as on C06, C10 and C11.]

That last step matters more for safes than for most jobs: if you ever claim, how the safe was installed is exactly what an insurer may ask about. Questions first? Contact us.

Safe Installation Across Runcorn

We fit safes for homeowners, landlords, shops, offices and licensed premises across Runcorn.

Safe fitting is planned, booked work, arranged at a time that suits a house, a shop or a small office alike. Every job starts with checking the safe, the chosen spot and the structure around it, and the work and final price are agreed before installation begins. There is no call-out charge, the price is clear before work starts, and the work is done by DBS-checked technicians [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence]. Afterwards, you should keep the invoice and any other paperwork you are given, because your insurer may ask to see evidence of how the safe was fitted when it looks at a claim.
